Despite its growing relevance, there is still no universally accepted definition of artificial intelligence.

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), artificial intelligence is defined as a machine-based system that, for a given set of objectives, can make predictions, recommendations, or decisions that influence real or virtual environments.

Currently, most AI applications belong to Weak AI, as they focus on solving specific problems rather than exhibiting generalized intelligence.

AI also employs different approaches for processing information:

  • Machine Learning (ML): Algorithms that learn from data to improve their performance without explicit programming.
  • Deep Learning (DL): A subset of machine learning that utilizes artificial neural networks to analyze large volumes of information and make more precise predictions.
  • Artificial Neural Networks: Models inspired by the functioning of the human brain, allowing AI to recognize complex patterns in data.

Each of these techniques has contributed to significant advancements in AI’s ability to interpret information and generate solutions across multiple industries.

Applications of Artificial Intelligence

AI has been integrated into various sectors, optimizing processes and improving efficiency. Some of its most notable applications include:

Artificial Intelligence in Colombia

In Colombia, AI adoption remains limited. A study by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) revealed that only 6% of manufacturing companies have implemented AI, a low rate compared to countries like the United States, where adoption in the manufacturing sector exceeds 12%.

The report also indicates that larger companies are more likely to adopt AI, while younger businesses stand out in developing new technologies. This suggests that AI innovation is being driven by startups and tech entrepreneurs.

The country has seen growth in AI adoption in industries such as banking, healthcare, and commerce. Local companies and startups have developed AI-based solutions to enhance efficiency and customer experiences.

However, challenges remain, including lack of funding and limited awareness of AI integration opportunities in businesses. Additionally, better coordination between the public and private sectors is needed to strengthen AI implementation.

With a developing ecosystem, AI represents an opportunity for Colombian businesses seeking to innovate and optimize their communication, sales, and business management strategies.
